Second Harvest seeks to meet the material and relational needs of its surrounding community by providing quality goods at affordable prices in a bright, modern, and welcoming space. We engage a diverse family of volunteers and employees to glean gently used clothing, housewares, and furniture, sell them affordably where they are needed most, and invest the proceeds into living wage jobs and ultimately grants to strengthen and accelerate neighborhood organizations and initiatives.
This #GivingTuesday, our community came together to support some of the programs we’re proudest of. The things that make Second Harvest #MoreThanAStore in our community. And we are SO GRATEFUL.
Because more than anything else, the thing that makes us more than a store is YOU. You are the donors whose pre-loved clothing and housewares fill our store 📦 You are the customers who trust us to provide the quality, affordable goods they expect 🛒You are the volunteers who are the beating heart of our store.💛
Thank YOU for your steadfast support of Second Harvest’s mission to meet the material and relational needs of our community. We truly could not do it without you. 🌾
You’ve probably heard us talk about all the things that make Second Harvest “more than a store.” Those are some of the things we’re proudest of: Our #CommunityFreeFridge. Making the switch to #solar. Free programming in our Community Corner. And providing gift cards for neighbors most in need.
Thrift store sales fund our store operations, and any profits are reinvested back into the community through grants. But from the Free Fridge to our free community programming, the things that make us #MoreThanAStore are only possible because of philanthropic dollars. It’s YOUR SUPPORT that makes the difference between Second Harvest being just an affordable store and being a 💛community hub💛

We want to introduce you to Kara (she’s on the bottom left 👆). When her career as a freelance opera singer and voice teacher came to a halt in COVID, she started making big batches of soup and posting the extra on one of those “free stuff” websites where people post items they want to give away. It was through that website that she connected with Barbara (bottom right 👆), a longtime Sharpsburg resident who often delivered meals to locals who were unhoused or food insecure.
The two of them teamed up. “I love to cook, and I started cooking meals for Barbara to deliver,” says Kara. Her “free stuff” posts shared what she and Barbara were trying to do, and soon dozens of neighbors had dropped off to-go containers, pantry staples, and more. Kara first met Rhonda and Glenn (top row 👆) when they dropped off 100 lbs of donated potatoes at her house.🥔
.
“When Second Harvest opened the #CommunityFreeFridge, I went totally banana crazy,” smiles Kara. Newly equipped with a gifted pressure cooker, soon Kara had made over 3,000 meals for Sharpsburg residents. “I could cook on a Navy ship,” she laughs. The most amazing part? She never spent a cent. “I wasn’t buying anything. It all came from neighbors,” Kara marvels. “That made me feel like I could really do a lot.” 🌾
.
THAT is the power of Second Harvest. Folks coming together to give what they can, and find what they need. And it’s YOUR SUPPORT that makes the difference between Second Harvest being just an affordable store and being a 💛community hub💛.

This #SmallBusinessSaturday we’re reminded that our business is about so much more than our bottom line. That’s why we announced this fall that all infant and toddler clothing would be FREE. Forever. Because we believe parents in our community shouldn’t have to make hard choices about how to clothe, feed, or house their families.
We’ve got better-than-Black-Friday deals, year-round. And for our business, growing well means staying rooted in the needs of our neighborhood. Come see what we’re all about… we’re open until 2pm today!
Neighbors like YOU are the backbone that sustain our mission and programs. And Second Harvest wouldn’t be rounding the corner on three successful years in business without your foundational support.
This #GivingTuesday, we’re coming to you to once again ask for your support. Because your support MATTERS. Many of the programs we’re proudest of – the things that make Second Harvest ✨more than a store✨ are only possible through the generosity of neighbors like you. More than anything else, the thing that makes us more than a store is YOU.
